Blair, Emily Jane Newell

(1877–1951) political activist, writer; born in Japon, Mont. She attended college, married, and published fiction before beginning her political career as a suffragist (1914). After rising to national vice-chairman of the Democratic Party (1922–28), she worked to elect women to public office. A prolific writer, she was also appointed to several high-level governmental posts in the 1930s and 1940s.
