F0082500 (fĕr′mē), Enrico 1901-1954. Italian-born American physicist who won a 1938 Nobel Prize for his work on radioactivity induced by neutron bombardment of various elements. He also led the team that produced the first controlled nuclear chain reaction (1942).

(fĕr′mē), Enrico 1901-1954. Italian-born American physicist who is best known for his work on nuclear physics. He discovered over 40 new isotopes and predicted the existence of the neutrino. In 1942, with Leo Szilard, Fermi built the world's first atomic reactor. Fermi also helped to develop the atomic bomb.
