Blavatskii, Vladimir Dmitrievich
Born Aug. 30 (Sept. 11), 1899, in St. Petersburg. Soviet archaeologist, art critic, and historian of classical culture.
A doctor of art criticism (1943), Blavatskii has been a professor at Moscow University since 1943. He led excavations of the classical cities of Charaxes (1931–35), Phanagoria (1936–40), and Panticapaeum (1945–58) and also conducted underwater archaeological studies of the Northern Black Sea Shore (1957–65). His main works are Greek Sculpture (1939), Agriculture in the Classical States of the Northern Black Sea Region (1953), Panticapaeum (1964), and Classical Field Archaeology. Blavatskii has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals.
