Any urinary obstruction can sharply increase the chances of the development of pyelitis, since obstruction interferes with the normal ability of the kidney to rid the body of harmful bacteria.Symptoms. Probably the most common symptoms of pyelitis are frequency and urgency of urination and dysuria. Other possible symptoms include fever, chills, headache, and pain in one or both sides of the lower back. Pyelitis may also be present without any outward symptoms, but urinalysis will reveal many pus cells and occasionally erythrocytes.Treatment. Pyelitis and pyelonephritis can usually be treated successfully with sulfonamides. Certain antibiotics and the urinary antiseptics are also helpful.
