单词 | comiskey, charlie |
释义 | Comiskey, CharlieComiskey, (Charles Albert) Charlie(1859–1931) baseball player/executive; born in Chicago. After his 13-year career as one of baseball's great pioneer players (1882–94), he became owner of the Chicago White Sox from its inception in 1901 until his death in 1931. Although "The Old Roman," as he was known, financed the building of a palatial stadium, Comiskey Park, in 1910, it was his penuriousness with salaries that provoked eight of his players to "fix" the 1919 "Black Sox" World Series, the only blemish on his Hall of Fame career (elected 1939). |
