Dragonhead (Dracocephalum), a genus of perennial grasses of the family Labiatae. The flowers are usually large and dark blue or violet. They are bilabiate, grow in false whorls, and are clustered in a common raceme. There are 40 to 45 species in Eurasia and one species in North America. In the USSR there are approximately 40 species, primarily in Middle Asia, on dry montane slopes and in rocky areas. D. moldavica grows in the Southern European USSR and in the Caucasus. It is sometimes cultivated, since it is one of the best nectariferous plants used in the perfume and food industries. D. ruyschiana is widespread in dry forests, shrubs, and meadows and on the steppes and as a ruderal plant. Many species of dragonhead are cultivated as ornamentals. dragonhead
