the relative effect of a material in separating the different rays of light by refraction, as when the substance is formed into a prism.

dispersive power

[də′spər·siv ‚pau̇·ər] (optics) A measure of the power of a medium to separate different colors of light, equal to (n₂- n₁)/(n- 1), where n₁ and n₂ are the indices of refraction at two specified widely differing wavelengths, and n is the index of refraction for the average of these wavelengths, or for the D line of sodium.
