Boiana

Boiana

a former village in Bulgaria, now a district of Sofia. It is known for its medieval church, whose most ancient part (probably dating back to the tenth or 11th century) is a small crossdomed stone church, with an almost square floor plan and one semicircular apse. In the 13th century, a second church, Kaloianova, which repeats the same floor plan, was added on to the old church; in the 19th century, an entrance was added. Unique 11th- and 12th-century frescoes (in the old church) and tempera paintings from 1259 have been preserved.
