archicortex

Any cortex with less than six layers of cells. The archicortes is the phylogenically oldest part of the brain which, with the paleocortex, develops in association with the olfactory system into the hippocampus and dentate gyrus. It is part of the limbic system and thus has a role in emotion and memory.
