Ashimov, Baiken Ashimovich

Born July 28 (Aug. 10), 1917, in the aul (village) of Shabakbai, now Sharykskii Sovkhoz, Ruzaevka Raion, Kokchetav Oblast, Kazakh SSR. Soviet state and party figure. Hero of Socialist Labor (1977). Member of the CPSU since 1940.

Ashimov graduated from the Leninskii Agricultural Technicum in Severnyi Kazakhstan Oblast in 1938, from the Leningrad Institute of Applied Zoology and Phytopathology in 1957, and, as a correspondence student, from the Higher Party School Under the Central Committee of the CPSU in 1969. A veteran of the Great Patriotic War, he served in the Soviet Army from 1938 to 1941 and from 1942 to 1945.

Beginning in 1945, Ashimov engaged in soviet and party work. He was second secretary of the Kokchetav oblast committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan from 1959 to 1961. He served as chairman of the Karaganda oblast executive committee from 1961 to 1963 and from 1964 to 1968. He was first secretary of the Karaganda agricultural oblast committee in 1963 and 1964 and held the same post on the Taldy-Kurgan oblast committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan from 1968 to 1970. In 1970, Ashimov became chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR. He was elected a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU in 1971. He was deputy to the eighth through tenth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.

Ashimov has been awarded four Orders of Lenin, four other orders, and various medals.
