Courland Elevation

an upland in the western part of the Latvian SSR, on the Courland Peninsula, in the basin of the Venta and Abava rivers. The Venta Valley divides it into a western and an eastern part. The maximum elevation is 184 m (Mt. Krievu Kalns). The upland is composed chiefly of limestones and dolomites, covered with loose Anthropogenic moraine-clay, paleolacustrine, and fluvioglacial deposits. The terrain is a hilly plain, with kames, drumlins, and ancient runoff valleys. The region is covered with coniferous (spruce and pine) and mixed forests. The economy is based on animal husbandry and the cultivation of grain and beets.
