Arends, Leslie (Cornelius)

(1895–1985) U.S. representative; born in Melvin, Ill. A graduate of Oberlin, and a World War I navy veteran, he worked for the county farm bureau before going to the U.S. House of Representatives (Rep., Ill.; 1935–74). He was minority whip (1939–53) and majority leader (1957–63).
