bone scanning

bone scanning

A method of diagnosis in which various diphosphonate substances labelled with a radioactive isotope of technetium are injected into the bloodstream. Within three hours about half of the material injected has been deposited in the bones, the highest concentration being in those areas in which bone blood flow and new bone formation are greatest. The whole body is then examined with a GAMMA CAMERA. A range of bone diseases can be detected early by this means and the method is highly sensitive to the presence of cancer that has spread to the bones from other parts of the body.
