figurational sociology
figurational sociology the sociological approach of Norbert ELIAS and those influenced by his writing. The concept of FIGURATION is de scribed by ELIAS (1939, 1970) and further reformulated in works by Goudsblom (1977), Dunning and Sheard (1979) and Mennell (1985). Eliasian Sociology, as it is sometimes called, has been more influential on the Continent, especially in Holland and Elias’ native Germany, than in the UK and North America. In the UK, the chief applications have been in the fields of SOCIOLOGY OF SPORT, SOCIOLOGY OF LEISURE and CULTURAL STUDIES. |
