Equivalents, Law of
a law of chemistry according to which the proportions of the masses of substances entering into chemical reaction are equal to or multiples of their equivalent weights. At the end of the 18th century, J. Richter presented a partial formulation of the law for the neutralization of an acid by a base; the law was formulated in more general terms by the British chemist W. Wollaston in 1807.
