Dasein

Dasein

(German) humankind's basic mode of participation in the world: ‘Being-in-the-world’ – a central concept in HEIDEGGER's philosophy. Three main aspects of Dasein were explored by Heidegger:
  1. ‘facticity’-what is ‘given’, one's own origins;
  2. ‘extentiality’ – one's ‘purposive being’ and creative potential;
  3. the tendency to deny one's unique potential – a loss of ‘authenticity’. ‘Unauthentic’ action occurs in modes of being in which action is ‘depersonalized’, or regarded as ‘objectivized’. See also EXISTENTIALISM.
