Borisevich, Nikolai Aleksandrovich

Born Sept. 21, 1923, in the village of Luchnoi Most, Igumen District, Minsk Province. Soviet physicist, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Byelorussian SSR (1969), and president of the Academy of Sciences of the Byelorussian SSR (1969). Member of the CPSU since 1945.

Borisevich graduated from the University of Byelorussia in 1950. He was the deputy director (1955–69) and head of the laboratory of the physics of infrared radiation (established in 1955) of the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Byelorussian SSR. His basic scientific works are on the luminescence of complex molecules in the gaseous phase, infrared spectroscopy, and quantum electronics. Borisevich developed optical methods for determining the temperature of excited molecules as well as their other characteristics. He established the dependence on temperature of intensity integrals for infrared absorption bands and created a new type of dispersion filter for the infrared zone of the spectrum. He proposed quantum generators with selective losses. Borisevich was a deputy at the seventh and eighth sessions of the Supreme Soviet. He has been awarded four orders as well as medals.
