Carington, Walter Whateley (1884–1947)

(religion, spiritualism, and occult)

Born Walter Whateley Smith, Carington changed his name in 1933 for family reasons. He was the author of a number of books on Spiritualism and telepathy. He founded and edited the journal Psychic Research Quarterly and in 1920 he became a member of the council of the Society for Psychical Research. Along with E. J. Dingwall, he investigated the French medium Marthe Beraud. Prior to this, in 1916–17, he had investigated the medium Gladys Osbourne Leonard and the Irish medium Kathleen Goligher.

Carington’s books included The Foundations of Spiritualism (1920), A Theory of the Mechanism of Survival (1920), The Death of Materialism (1932), Telepathy: An Outline of its Facts, Theory and Implications (1945), and Matter, Mind and Meaning (1949; completed by H. H. Price).
