David III Kouropalate

 

Year of birth unknown: died 1001. King of Tao-Klardzheti in southwestern Georgia in the second half of the tenth century. For his role in suppressing the rebellion of Varda Sklir in 979 the Byzantine Empire granted him the Erzurum region and other lands. Friendly relations with the Byzantine Empire created favorable conditions for David’s struggle against the Arabs. He succeeded in freeing much Georgian territory from them, as well as part of the Armenian and Azerbaijani lands.
