Djerid

(Shatt al Jarid), a depression without drainage in central Tunisia, 16 m above sea level. It is 120 km long and 60 km wide. During the rainy season (winter) it fills with water, becoming a salt lake which evaporates during the dry season. Along the edges of the depression are outlets for fresh groundwater and artesian wells surrounded by oases.
