Dmitrii Irinarkhovich Zavalishin

Born June 13 (25), 1804, in Astrakhan; died Feb. 5 (17), 1892, in Moscow. Decembrist; naval lieutenant.

From 1822 to 1824, Zavalishin took part in the around-the-world naval voyage under the command of M. P. Lazarev. In the summer of 1825 he became a close associate of K. F. Ryleev, and although he never was a formal member of the Northern Society of the Decembrists, he was devoted to its plans. He was absent from St. Petersburg during the Decembrist uprising of Dec. 14, 1825, but was sentenced to 20 years at hard labor. In 1863 he returned from Siberia. From the 1850’s to the 1880’s he collaborated on periodicals, including Moskovskie vedomosti, Russkii vestnik, and Russkaia starina. He outlived all his comrades, as a result of which he is referred to as the “last Decembrist” in historical literature. Zavalishin is the author of Notes of a Decembrist (1906), which contains valuable information on the life of the Decembrists in Siberia.
