Becker, Knuth

Born Jan. 21, 1893, in HjØrring. Danish writer.

Becker’s first collection Poems, which was imbued with antimilitaristic feeling, appeared in 1916. In the collection of poems entitled Silhouettes (1921), he depicts the working people. He is the author of lyrical antimilitaristic verse (the collection Form and Content, 1951). His play You, the Preachers (1922) is markedly social in content. His largely autobiographical novels, which have a common hero and depict bourgeois society in a critical light, occupy a central place in his work: Daily Bread (1932), The World Awaits (1934), Restless Spring (1938–39), When the Train Is Running (1944), Marianne (1956) and The House (1961).
