Brodeur, Martin Pierre

Brodeur, Martin Pierre,

1972–, Canadian ice hockey player, b. Montreal. He became starting goalie for the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1993 and played with them for 21 seasons. Known for his mental toughness and unorthodox style—he prefers to play standing up rather than with his knees on the ice and legs fanned out—he is considered one of the greatest goaltenders ever. He won three Stanley Cup championships with the Devils (1995, 2000, 2003) and four Vézina trophies (2003, 2004, 2007–8) for the NHL's best goaltender, and is the NHL's all-time leader in regular season wins (688), regular season shutouts (124), and playoff shutouts (24). As a member of the Canadian Men's National Hockey Team, he won Olympic gold medals in 2002 and 2010 and the World Cup of Hockey championship in 2004.
