Brooks, Phillips,

1835–93, American Episcopal bishop, b. Boston. In 1869 he began his ministry at Trinity Church, Boston, where he became one of the most influential ministers of his time. In 1891 he was consecrated bishop of Massachusetts. His lectures at Yale were published as Lectures on Preaching (1877), and his Bohlen lectures in Philadelphia as The Influence of Jesus (1879). The Christmas hymn "O Little Town of Bethlehem" was included in his Christmas Songs and Easter Carols (1903).

Brooks, Phillips

(1835–93) Protestant religious leader; born in Boston, Mass. He graduated from Harvard in 1855, taught briefly, and was ordained an Episcopal minister in 1859. His famous hymn "O Little Town of Bethlehem" was first sung in 1868. From 1869–91 he served as pastor of Trinity Church and he was university preacher at Harvard. His Lectures on Preaching were published in 1877. He died not long after he was consecrated Episcopal bishop of Massachusetts in 1893.
