Its instruments were designed to measure the energy, mass, and direction of flow of charged particles and check the effects of radiation on a package of electronic devices and components. The satellite performed several of its experiments well, but contact with it was lost Oct. 12 1991, presumably because of onboard battery failure.CRRES
