Brumel’, Valerii Nikolaevich

 

Born May 14, 1942, in the village of Razvedki, Chita Oblast. Soviet field athlete; Honored Master of Sport of the USSR (1961). Member of the CPSU since 1964. Graduated from the Central Institute of Physical Culture (Moscow) in 1967.

Brumel’ has repeatedly set records for the running high jump in the USSR, Europe, and the world. In 1963 he attained a world record of 228 cm. He was champion at the XVIII Olympic Games; (1964, Tokyo—218 cm). In 1965 he sustained a serious injury to his leg in an automobile crash; after effective treatment he resumed training in 1969 (June 1969-206 cm). He was three times acknowledged best athlete of the year in the world (1961, 1962, and 1963). In 1962, Brumel’ was awarded the highest honors in the world of sports—the Helms World Trophy and the Golden Caravel of Columbus. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and a medal.
