clinical assistant

clinical assistant

A now-retired term for a service grade medical doctor in the UK in a non-training hospital post who practised below consultant level. Clinical assistants often worked on a part-time basis under the supervision of a consultant and did not need specialist accreditation. Time spent as a clinical assistant didn’t count as training time. Clinical assistants, staff/trust grade doctors, clinical medical officers, and hospital practitioners have been subsumed under “specialty doctor grade”, which was established by the GMC in 2008.
