Beshmet

Beshmet

(Turkic) a men’s outer garment found among a number of peoples in the Northern Caucasus and Middle Asia (Tatar bishmet, Kazakh beshpent or beshpet, Kirghiz beshmant, and so on). The beshmet is an open garment that reaches to the knees; sometimes it is quilted. It is gathered into folds and belted at the waist. It is worn over a shirt and under other outer clothing (a Circassian robe or a gown). The cut has local variations (for example, a wide or narrow sleeve).
