Feleo, Juan

Born May 1, 1896, in Santa Rosa, in the province of Nueva Ecija; died Aug. 24, 1946. Figure in the peasant and working-class movement in the Philippines. Schoolteacher.

In 1917, Feleo founded the Tenants’ Union in Nueva Ecija Province. He served as deputy chairman of the National Confederation of Tenants and Agricultural Workers from 1922 to 1924, as deputy chairman of the National Confederation of Peasants from 1924 to 1931, and as deputy chairman of the National Peasants Union in 1945 and 1946. He was one of the founders of the Communist Party of the Philippines (1930) and a permanent member of the Politburo of the party’s Central Committee. During World War II he fought in the ranks of the Hukbalahap against the Japanese occupiers. In 1945, Feleo became governor of Nueva Ecija Province. In 1945 and 1946 he represented the National Peasants Union in the Executive Committee of the Democratic Alliance. He was killed by men in the pay of reactionary landowners.
