Burbot(Lota lota), a freshwater fish of the family Gadidae. There are two dorsal fins, and the chin has antennae. The scales are minute. The body is up to 1.2 m long and weighs up to 32 kg. Burbot are found primarily in the rivers of Europe, Asia, and America above 45° N lat. They are active in cold water, becoming sluggish at temperatures above 16°C. Sexual maturity is attained in the third or fourth year; fertility is from 33, 000 to 5 million eggs. In the winter the roe are deposited under the ice; the slightly adhesive eggs stay on the bottom. Burbot are predators, feeding on fish and bottom invertebrates. They are commercially valuable. burbotburbot
