Population, 207,000 (1971). It is an important transportation center. After independence Durgapur grew into a very important center of heavy industry of the main coal and metallurgical region of India. A state metallurgical complex and a plant for special steels operate in Durgapur. Plants for the manufacturing of mining equipment and optical glass were built there with the aid of the USSR. There are also large machine-building and chemical plants in Durgapur. Approximately 50 large heavy-industry plants and a number of small enterprises operate in the city. Durgapur is one of the main centers for the all-around development of the Damodar Valley: a dam has been built, and a network of canals begins here. The rapidly growing industry of Durgapur is experiencing a shortage of water. Durgapur is a major power center. |
