Burgkmair, Hans the Elder
Burgkmair, Hans the Elder
Born 1473, in Augsburg; died there 1531. German painter and engraver of the Renaissance; leader of the Augsburg school. He was a student of M. Schongauer and was influenced by the art of northern Italy. In his best works (St. John’s Altar, 1518, and Altar With Crucifixion, 1519, both in the Old Pinakothek in Munich), spatial freedom of composition is organically combined with the expression of feelings and movements. Burgkmair was a pioneer in the use of colored engraving on wood.
