Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA),

(ē-mĕr'jen-sē med'i-kăl trēt'ment lā'bŏr akt), An act passed by the U.S. Congress establishing the right of any person to present to an emergency department and receive, within the capabilities of the hospital, a medical screening examination and stabilizing care of that person or an unborn child, without regard to the patient's ability to pay.
