Coats LandCoats Landpart of Antarctica between 20° and 37° W long. It borders on Queen Maud Land on the east and turns into the Filchner Ice Shelf on the west. Its icy shores, which are almost wholly ice shelves, are washed by the Weddell Sea. Almost all of Coats Land is a surface of the continental ice sheet, with elevations of 1,000–2,000 m. Coats Land was discovered by the Scottish national expedition of W. Bruce in 1904 and was named in honor of the Scottish entrepreneur who financed it. The region is the site of work done primarily by British expeditions; the Halley Bay scientific station has been operating in Coats Land since 1956. Coats Land
