Colby, William Edward

(1875–1964) lawyer, conservationist; born in Benicia, Calif. Trained as a lawyer, he specialized in forest and mining law. In his first important conservation battle, he joined John Muir in a failed effort to block the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in Yosemite National Park. He campaigned for the expansion of Sequoia National Park and the creation of King's Canyon and Olympic National Parks and headed the California State Park Commission from 1927–37. He was a director of the Sierra Club for 49 years.
