Cooper Creek

 

(known as the Barcoo before its junction with the Thomson River), a river in the central part of Australia. Length, 1,400 km; basin area, 285,000 sq km. Cooper Creek originates in the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range and flows across the sparse and barren plains of the Great Artesian Basin. The river is fed by ground water and rain. Some parts of the river, particularly in the lower course, frequently go dry. The average water flow is 70 cu m per sec. During the occasional high floods from heavy summer rainfalls, it reaches landlocked Lake Eyre.
