Demetrius of Alopeke

ancient Greek Attic sculptor, primarily a portraitist, who lived at the end of the fifth and the first half of the fourth century B.C.

Demetrius attempted to convey the characteristic, individual traits of people’s appearances. His works include the portraits of the hipparch Simon, the priestess of Athena, Lysimachos, and the general Pellichus, all of which are mentioned in ancient literature; also the portrait of a child, which has come down to us in a Roman copy (marble, Hermitage, Leningrad). A portrait of Antisthenes (marble, Vatican) is also ascribed to Demetrius.
