Demodex canis Demodex canisa follicle mite; considered part of normal skin fauna in low numbers; causes demodicosis in dogs when the number of mites exceeds immune system tolerance. Genetic predisposition may influence severity of lesions; some cases progress from localized to a generalized infestation. Scaly, pruritic, erythematous patches, common sites are perioral and periocular; partial or complete alopecia may lead to a spectacled appearance when it occurs around the eyes. A short form of D. canis (122-mcg long) has been identified. |
