Coppin, Fanny Marion Jackson

(1837–1913) educator, missionary; born in Washington, D.C. Purchased out of slavery as a girl, she went on to graduate from college and as head principal of the Institute for Colored Youth, Philadelphia (1869–1902), she pioneered training for urban blacks. Active in the missionary movement, she spent nearly ten years after 1902 in South Africa.
