Gorchilin, Andrei

(Party pseudonym. Grenader). Born Aug. 19(31), 1886. in the village of Mar’ino, Ruzskii District, Moscow Province; died July 22, 1956, in Moscow. Participant in the Russian revolutionary movement. Member of the Communist Party from 1904.

Gorchilin was born into a peasant family. He graduated from municipal school and from the second class of the sculpture division of the Higher Art and Technical Studios in Moscow in 1928. He was a metalworker in the workshops of the Moscow-Kazan railroad and a member of the committee of the RSDLP of the railroad district in Moscow. In 1905, Gorchilin was a member of the Moscow committee of the RSDLP. During the December armed uprising in 1905 he was the leader of a detachment of armed railway workers in Moscow. From 1906 to 1912 he was engaged in illegal party work in Kiev, Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Simbirsk. From 1912 to 1917 he lived abroad. Gorchilin took part in the October Revolution of 1917 in Moscow and was in the ranks of the Red Guards of Lefortovo Raion. During the Civil War of 1918–20 he was in special-assignment units. In later years he was the head of a cinematography school, the director of the Mezhrabpom Film Studio, and a sculptor. He was awarded the Order of Lenin and various medals.
