a shallow salt lake without drainage in southern Australia, north of Spencer Gulf. The lake is situated on a semiarid plain with dune-type relief of red-colored sands, at an altitude of about 100 m. Its area is about 4,700 sq km. During the dry time of year it is a flat basin covered with tough silt and a pellicular crust.
