French Alps

the part of the Western Alps situated in France. The French Alps, which are approximately 330 km long, are divided into the northern and southern French Alps. The northern French Alps are high mountains with glaciers, glacial-mountain landforms, coniferous forests, and subalpine and alpine meadows. They include the massifs of Mont Blanc (elevations to 4,807 m), Pelvoux, and Belledonne and the Graian and Cottian Alps. The southern French Alps are lower; elevations generally reach 3,000 m. The southern French Alps include the Provence and Maritime Alps; the climate and landscapes have Mediterranean elements.
