Sabaliauskāite, Genovaitė

 

(in Lithuanian, Geno-vaitė Sabaliauskātė). Born Apr. 2, 1923, in Kaunas. Soviet ballet dancer. People’s Artist of the USSR (1964). Member of the CPSU since 1952.

From 1934 to 1938, Sabaliauskāite studied in a ballet studio in Kaunas. In 1942 she graduated from the Leningrad Choreographic School, where she had studied in A. Ia. Vaganova’s class. From 1938 to 1968 she periodically appeared as a soloist with the Kaunas Theater of Opera and Ballet (later the Lithuanian Theater of Opera and Ballet in Vilnius).

Sabaliauskāite was the first to portray the Lithuanian woman in dance in such roles as Kasta in Juzeliūnas’ On the Seashore, the title role in Indra ‘s Audronė, and Eglė in Balsys’ Eglė, Queen of the Grass Snakes. She also appeared in major classical roles. She began teaching at the č iurlionis School of Arts in Vilnius in the division of choreography in 1952. She has toured outside the USSR. Sabaliauskāite has been awarded two orders.
