Goris

 

a city; center of Goris Raion, Armenian SSR, on the Goris River (a tributary of the Vorotan). Situated at an elevation of 1,370 m on the Evlakh-Nakhichevan’ highway, 70 km north of the Kafan railroad station, with which it is linked by a road suitable for motor vehicles. Population, 15.000 (1970). Goris has plants producing miniature electric motors and rubber footwear, a butter and cheese plant, and auto repair, tobacco curing, and woodworking plants, as well as knitwear and rug-weaving factories. A branch of the Armenian Pedagogical Institute, an agricultural technicum, and a teachers college are located in Goris. There is a museum of local lore and the A. Bakunts Museum. Goris is a tourist center.
