Ganser's syndrome

Ganser's syndrome

A pattern of fraudulent and exaggerated simulation of psychiatric behaviour, usually detectable by the expert as revealing the subject's notion of madness rather than any recognized psychiatric pattern. It is common among prisoners awaiting trial especially when they believe they are being watched. Recovery is sudden when no further advantage is perceived. (Sigbert Joseph Maria Ganser, 1853–1931, German psychiatrist).
