Friedrich Delitzsch

Delitzsch, Friedrich

Born Sept. 3, 1850, in Erlangen; died Dec. 19, 1922, at Langenschwalbach. German scholar; one of the founders of the Assyriological school in Germany.

Delitzsch pioneered the investigation of Kassite and Cappadocian (Old Assyrian) cuneiform documents; studied the Akkadian, Sumerian, and Hittite languages; and compiled dictionaries and grammars. An advocate of pan-Babylonianism, Delitzsch from 1902 to 1905 delivered the series of lectures “The Bible and Babylon” (Russian translation, 1906), in which he maintained that Biblical tradition had been decisively influenced by Babylonian tradition.
