Gheorghe Tatarascu

(also G. Tătărescu), Born Dec. 11, 1886, in Craiova; died Mar. 28, 1957, in Bucharest. Rumanian political and state figure. Member of the Rumanian Academy (1938).

Tătărăscu attended the universities of Prague and Berlin. During the 1920’s and 1930’s he occupied several ministerial posts. General secretary of the National Liberal Party between 1931 and 1934, he served as premier from 1934 to 1937. In 1938 and 1939 he was a member of the crown council, and in 1939 and 1940 he was deputy premier and minister of the interior. In May 1944, Tătărăscu joined forces with the Rumanian Communist Party in the struggle against the fascist military dictatorship of I. Antonescu.

From 1945 to 1947, Tătărăscu again served as deputy premier as well as foreign minister in the democratic government of P. Groza. In November 1947 he and other members of the bourgeois liberal group he had formed in 1945 were removed from the government by a decree of the National Assembly because of their opposition to its policies.
