Giovanni Girolamo Savoldo

Savoldo, Giovanni Girolamo

Born circa 1480, in Brescia; died there after 1548. Italian painter of the Brescian school of the High Renaissance.

Savoldo developed under the influence of Giorgione and Titian. His religious compositions (Adoration of the Shepherds, 1540, the Church of San Giobbe, Venice) depict common people, and the chiaroscuro modeling of forms is suffused with energy. His portraits have a clarity of composition and an intimate quality.
