Iakov Manandian

Manandian, Iakov Amazaspovich

Born Nov. 10, (22), 1873, in Akhaltsikhe, Georgia; died Feb. 4, 1952, in Yerevan. Soviet historian; member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1939) and the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR (1943); Honored Scientific Worker of the Armenian SSR (1935).

In 1897, Manandian graduated from the philosophy department of the University of Jena, and in 1898 he passed his examinations as an external student of the Oriental faculty of the University of St. Petersburg. In 1926 he became a professor at the University of Yerevan in the subdepartment of ancient Armenian history.

Manandian played an important role in the study of problems of the socioeconomic structure of ancient and medieval Armenia. His main works were in philology, metrology, and historical geography. One of his most important works was Critical Survey of the History of the Armenian People (vols. 1-3, 1945–57). He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
