- The society was formed (as the Printers' Labourers' Union) in 1889. In 1899 it adopted the name Operative Printers' Assistants' Society. In 1904 became the National Society of Operative Printers' Assistants and from 1912 the National Society of Operative Printers and Assistants. From 1975 it was retitled the National Society of Operative Printers, Graphical and Media Personnel, while retaining the original acronym as a title. In 1982 it merged with the Society of Graphic and Allied Trades to form Sogat 82..
